2024 saw several elections across the globe and in India. From the Lok Sabha elections to eight state assemblies, the focus of the polls has now shifted to the national capital - New Delhi.
Following Arvind Kejriwal's release from Tihar Jail, the Aam Aadmi Party supremo announced his resignation, followed by a call for early elections in Delhi.
While the Election Commission of India works towards finalising a date for the Delhi assembly elections, the incumbent AAP and the Bharatiya Janta Party have begun their campaigning.
BJP Leaders Join AAP Ahead Of Assembly PollsAmid the "uncertainty" regarding tickets, many BJP leaders have left the saffron party and fled to join AAP.
As per a report by PTI, at least six BJP leaders have joined AAP in the recent weeks after unsuccessful runs with BJP during the 2020 polls.
Surinder Singh Pal Bittu is the latest BJP leader to join the Arvind Kejriwal party ahead of the polls.
Meanwhile, as both parties see an influx of members, the BJP and AAP have begun their campaigning for the polls. Earlier on Sunday, BJP members were seen holding a rally against the Kejriwal government.
BJP leader Vijay Goel and others were seen raising slogans during a protest against the AAP-led Delhi government near Ghazipur landfill site.
Delhi Polls Likely In February 2025The original date for the assembly elections in Delhi was set for October 2025. However, with the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister, the polls are now likely to take place earlier.
While an official announcement from the Election Commission is awaited, the Delhi polls are expected to take place by mid-February 2025.
The dates for the same are expected to be announced by the polling body after January 6, 2025.
What Happened In The Last Elections?The last assembly elections were held in 2020 during which the Aam Aadmi Party saw a landslide victory. AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal secured a total of 62 seats of the 70-seat legislative assembly while the BJP secured eight.
However, four years laterjl999 gaming, support for AAP has started to dwindle. This was noticed during the Lok Sabha Elections where the BJP swept all seven seats of the national capital.
